Description of Coenzyme Q10
CoQ10, often referred to as ubiquinone, is a fat-soluble micronutrient synthesized by the body. It is present in nearly all tissues, with the greatest concentrations found in the heart, liver, kidneys, and pancreas. (14) As an antioxidant, CoQ10 plays an important role in scavenging free radicals and reducing oxidative stress. CoQ10 is also required for the mitochondrial synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a process that generates energy in your cells. Since all cells require adequate amounts of ATP, CoQ10 is essential for the health and functioning of all of your organs and tissues. CoQ10 is fat-soluble, meaning it’s best absorbed when taken with a meal that contains fat.
Supplementing with CoQ10 has been shown to be beneficial for various health conditions, including migraines, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and subfertility, and may promote skin and oral health.
Coenzyme Q10 is an important vitamin-like substance required for the proper function of many organs and chemical reactions in the body. It helps provide energy to cells. Coenzyme Q10 also seems to have antioxidant activity. People with certain diseases, such as heart failure, high blood pressure, gum disease, Parkinson disease, blood infections, certain diseases of the muscles, and HIV infection, might have lower levels of coenzyme Q10.
